Remotely Operated Vehicles or ROV, as the name suggests, are devices that can be used to access remote areas. These are used offshore and for underwater operations. It is essentially an underwater robot. It is operated from a floating land or from a proximate land. They are connected to the source with the help of an umbilical cord that is usually just buoyant. These cords carry control data and power that is required for the bot and data signals from the bot as they are made of a bunch of electrical cords and fibre optics. The ROV Operator helps in adding to the world’s mineral extraction. There are various underwater operations that shall be discussed in this article. The underwater operations are known as ‘underwater intervention’ in the industries. The ROV operator can be equipped with a simple video camera or dextrous mechanisms for the complex work.

The pilot from above the surface of the water will have eyes even in the hazardous environmental conditions in the underwater world with the aid of these ROVs. These will go places that are far beyond a diver’s reach.

The ROV operator is used to perform various offshore. They play a vital role in the exploration and production of oil and gas.

The ROVs have a certain visual device, like a camera, with specifications according to requirements and be able to work underwater. These play the role of eyes at the time of drilling under water. Deepwater exploration became possible due to the development of this tech. This tech helped overcome the then unrealistic discovering possibilities. This began with the idea of HOV or Human Occupied Vehicle, i.e., the idea of a human going deeper in a suitable vehicle. This was successful to a certain extent. The human fragility under great pressures became the reason for the HOV’s development. This development became the base for the development of the Remotely Operated Vehicles.

Although Dimitri Rebikoff was the first to have developed tethered ROV, the US military, expanded the properties of the technology and used them on several of their missions including saving their sailors from an unfortunate catastrophe. Initially, the tech wasn’t up to the mark. But its development has reached great heights. Looks like more developments or upgrades are on the way.

At the minimum, an ROV will possess aquatic thrusters, camera, lights. Some of the other instruments that can be mounted to an ROV are:

Mechanical manipulators

Sonar

Magnetometers

Types of cameras

Cutting or sharing tools

Devices used for measurements

The rest of the electrical systems are fit inside an oil-filled, water-tight or pressurized compartments.

There are five types of ROVs Operator-

1) Small electric ROV-
The smallest type of ROV operator is that it does not utilize hydraulic pumps and are limited to depths of 1000 feet.

2) High Capability electric ROV-
They don’t utilize a hydraulic pump either. It can only be used for deep-sea observation and illumination. Used mostly by the military and scientific industries.

3) General class ROV-
It is electrically driven. May contain a primitive manipulator and sonar. A small 5 horsepower electric motor is used for locomotion.

4) Work class ROV-
Smallest iteration of hydraulic ROV. Fit with a 7-function manipulator, a five-function grabber and modified for specific applications.

5) Heavy class ROV-
The most capable type of industrial ROV. These are multifunctional. These ROVs possess the ability to lift 12,000 lb. from the sea floor to the surface but are limited to working depths of 10,000 ft.

6) Autonomous underwater vehicles were developed for military uses. These are not introduced in any of the other industries. They primarily stalk enemy ships, protected harbours, and mining sweep. These vehicles do not require a tether or the extent of user manipulation needed for ROVs. AUVs are expected to become available for commercial applications once they have developed a niche in deep-sea drilling and construction.

ROVs Operators are used in various industries. The military uses it to spy and watch out.

These ROVs have various advantages. Some of them are-

Robust and rugged in design, and built to withstand harsh water environments, underwater ROVs require minimal maintenance.

Depending on the conditions and type of operation, divers can only remain submerged underwater up to 30 minutes to an hour at a time and most jobs require a dive team consisting of 2-3 divers – commercial diver, standby diver, and supervisor – for a single mission.

One of the most remarkable benefits of the ROV is its photo and video recording capabilities, providing high-resolution footage.

Depending on its size, an ROV operator is capable of manoeuvring and inspecting small and hard to reach areas.
