What Is CRPA?
Control Reception Pattern Antennas, or CRPA, is, at its most basic, a system designed to reduce RF interference and establish “truth” signals in the field. Although the system itself is complex, we’ll stick to simpler explanations for now.
CRPA consists of a multi-element antenna and electronics that work together to reduce noise and boost signal through a combination of beamforming, forming nulls, and other techniques.
Approaches to Testing
There’s usually a linear relationship between testing accuracy and cost. If you think about it, this makes sense. The more complex an environment you’re testing against, the higher the investment required to get everything just right.
CRPA testing is no different. There are four main approaches, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Replay
Replay is easily the most realistic approach to CRPA testing, but, of course, you’re looking at past executions. This means you don’t have any ability to change signals or interference patterns after the fact dynamically.
Additionally, if you want to simulate a particular environment properly, you need to test in that specific environment. Particularly in the Defense Sector, this is untenable as it would expose your system to threats.
Anechoic Chamber
Unless you’re lucky enough to be situated at Edwards AF Base, getting hold of an anechoic chamber that’s large enough for CRPA testing is hard. Building your own chamber that’s large enough is an adventure on its own, often ending up being far too expensive.
Field Testing
Staging can only get you so far. There are countless variables to consider, and test time in the field is expensive. Even more frustrating, there are usually many teams contesting field use, so your time may be limited.
Simulation
Once the most expensive testing solution, evaluating CRPA capabilities through simulation has become far more attainable. In particular, advances in wavefront simulation technology have made solutions far more affordable than they were.

Today, it makes sense to invest in wavefront simulation technology. It’s come a long way and is worth testing.
In a complex world, you need complex applications. So, realistically, it makes sense to combine testing approaches. Start with simulation for rapid iterations and lowest cost and then move on from there.
