Are you hoping to develop or improve your company’s employee training program for new or existing hires? Having an effective employee training plan in place can do great things for your business, as your employees will learn about the company culture and the expectations that come with their role.

If you’re looking for ways to make a robust training program that welcomes in and guides new or existing hires, keep reading. In this guide, we will go over some tips and tricks that can help you develop a training program that works.

Learn More About Employee Traning Programs and Their Benefits

In order to develop an effective employee training plan, you will want to learn more about this method and what benefits it can allow your employees, and therefore your company as a whole. First, figure out who will lead the training development and implementation, such as a team or a sole employee training director. You should then assess areas of your company that could use additional training.

You should analyze the performance issues already happening within your company by asking your department managers where they are noticing areas in need of improvement. Analyze these issues and decide if additional training would be the solution or if there is another source of assistance that could solve the problem. If training does seem to be the solution, you will want to start doing some research that can help you develop a training plan.

Conduct Assessments

Rather than diving right in to come up with a training solution, you should take a step back to create a plan that will actually work. Firstly, you will want to identify your company goal so that your training program will directly support this goal. You want to make sure there is a clear reason why you are creating and implementing the training program, and it should be correlated to your overall company goal.

These goals could be to increase productivity, to increase revenue, or to cut down on company waste. Identifying this goal is important, as it will allow you to determine what task your employees will need to perform to reach that goal. Look at the gap in performance to establish what your employees are doing now, and what would have to change to meet your goal.

Once you have determined this gap, you can begin to figure out what kind of training methods will help your employees improve a certain process. This could be in the form of a verbal training session or a hands-on demonstration. However, you want to think beyond just the tasks your employees will need to perform.

Instead, you should go a step further to identify what characteristics or skill sets employees should have or will be able to learn in order to do this task effectively. Determining the characteristics of the ideal hire in this role will allow you to identify what ways they would most effectively work. Additionally, having this data will allow you to more easily identify talent when interviewing potential candidates for certain positions.

It’s more realistic to think of the average characteristics of employees in a certain department or position rather than trying to cater to the individual. Think about the average skills of the employees in certain roles to determine what kind of training program would resonate most with them. Additionally, you could combine multiple training methods in one training program to make sure you are resonating with a diverse range of learners.

Keep Employee Learning Methods in Mind

You want to remember that your employees are adults with a wide range of learning methods that work best for them. Keep in mind that your training program should give your employees some flexibility so that they can self-direct the process. Your employees are coming from all different backgrounds with different experiences and knowledge, so your training program should be goal-oriented.

Your employees need to feel that the training is relevant to them rather than making them feel that it’s a waste of their time. Your employees should be aware of the benefits that will come with the training program, and you should work to help them feel valued and respected along the way.

Establish Your Training Program Learning Objectives

As we’ve stated, your employees want to know what’s in it for them after completing a training session. For this reason, it’s important to establish clear learning objectives for each of your programs. This will not only allow employees to know what to expect from the training, but it will also help you make sure your training programs are meeting the intended objectives.

This will come in handy when you need to tweak or rework your training sessions. These objectives should be a list of things employees should be able to do after completing the training program. You can evaluate your employee’s comprehension of the training program by giving them a test or quiz, which you can make yourself with websites like FlexiQuiz.
