Split System for the House: How to Choose and What to Pay Attention To

The right choice of split system for your home depends not only on comfort on hot summer days or cool winter evenings, but also on the level of energy consumption, and therefore on utility costs. Modern split systems are distinguished by wide functionality and a variety of characteristics, which allow you to choose the best option for almost any condition. It is no coincidence that many companies providing San Diego HVAC services pay special attention to the selection of such solutions for residential premises, helping customers achieve the ideal balance between convenience and economy.

How a Split System Works

A split system works on the principle of removing heat from the room to the street by circulating the refrigerant. You can consider the operation of the air conditioner in more detail, step by step.

In the outdoor unit, the refrigerant (freon) is pumped by the compressor into the condenser heat exchanger, where it is compressed and condensed, acquiring a liquid state. At the same time, it heats up strongly.

At the same time, the condenser heat exchanger is blown by a fan, and the refrigerant cools down to the outside temperature. From the condenser, the cooled freon passes through a throttle, a device that regulates the flow of refrigerant. In this case, the freon pressure drops sharply, and it boils.

Freon enters the heat exchanger of the indoor unit evaporator through the main line, where it evaporates and cools down significantly. In the indoor module, the fan pumps air through the cold heat exchanger of the evaporator in recirculation mode, due to which the air in the room is cooled.

In the HVAC services market, split systems stand out due to their combination of efficiency and ease of use.

Types of Split Systems

By type, the following indoor units are distinguished:

  • wall-mounted;
  • duct;
  • cassette;
  • floor-ceiling;
  • console;
  • column.

Each type differs in the method and location of installation and is suitable for certain conditions. For residential premises, wall-mounted air conditioners are usually used. Such models are specially designed for residential and office premises with a normal ceiling height and an area of up to 754 ft².

The wall-mounted unit is installed on the wall at a distance of 3.94 in from the ceiling. This arrangement does not take up useful space and does not visually burden the interior. In addition, they are cheaper than other types of systems with similar characteristics.

A regular split system has one external and one internal unit. It is designed for one room. For example, to air condition several rooms in a house, you will have to install the corresponding number of split systems.

A multi-split system includes one external unit and, depending on the model, from 2 to 9 internal ones. Multi-systems are used to air condition several rooms at the rate of one internal unit per room. In this case, you can select an individual cooling mode in each of the conditioned rooms.

Multi-split systems are often chosen for a house with a large number of rooms. Here, the main selection criterion is the price. In some cases, it is cheaper to install two split systems than one multi-split with two internal units. In another option, a multi-split system with 3 internal units may be cheaper than three separate split systems.

Features of Choosing a Split System

There are many models with different characteristics and functions on the modern market, so it is important to consider not only the price and brand, but also the technical parameters of the equipment.

Cooling Capacity

This is the main characteristic that will determine how effectively the air conditioner will cope with cooling. According to the simplest calculations, the basic cooling capacity should be at least 3412 BTU / h for every ~ 108 ft², but this calculation is quite approximate. To more accurately calculate the required capacity, add to the basic calculation:

  • 341 BTU / h for each person living in this room;
  • 1023.6 BTU / h for long-term electrical appliances (TV, computer);
  • and another 10-20% of the basic capacity if the windows face the sunny side.

It is not recommended to overdo it with the cooling capacity, since the more powerful the air conditioner, the louder it works and the stronger the flow of blown air, which can cause discomfort.

Air Purification

All modern air conditioners provide air purification, but the degree of this purification may vary and depends on the composition of the filter unit. In some cases, this parameter should be given special attention. If the air outside is not of the best quality, then it is advisable to choose a model with a carbon filter. Adsorption air purification will also not be superfluous for smokers in the room, since the carbon filter copes well with odors and harmful substances in tobacco smoke.

For people prone to allergies, it is recommended to choose air conditioners with a HEPA filter, as they trap allergens and even bacteria.

It is better to install air conditioners with an air sterilization function in a child’s room. These are photocatalytic filters, catechin, and/or UV purification, which will destroy up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses in the air.

Noise Level

This characteristic is important if the air conditioner is selected for a bedroom or a children’s room. To ensure that it does not interfere with sleep, you should choose models with a noise level of no more than 22 dB. You can also choose a model with the “Sleep” function, in which the device reduces the fan speed, and therefore the noise during operation.

Functionality

The main function of split systems is air cooling, although many models also support heating. At a minimum, the functionality includes the selection of the desired temperature that the device will maintain. All other functions, such as a timer, programming, motion sensors, special modes, and remote control via Wi-Fi, are a matter of personal preference.

Conclusion

A split system for a home is an important element in creating a comfortable and healthy microclimate. When choosing, it is worth considering the area of the room, noise level, energy efficiency, and additional functions that will provide convenience in the long term. To get a truly reliable and effective solution, it is important to trust professionals. Tytum, a company offering modern HVAC services in San Diego, helps customers select and install a split system, taking into account all the features of the house and the needs of the family.
