Top 4 Famous Churches In Goa

The Church of Our Lady of the Mount was built in the 15th century by Alfonso de Albuquerque, the Governor of Portuguese India. The Church of Our Lady of the Mount is one of the oldest churches in Old Goa. Though its location is secluded, it’s a hidden gem that offers stunning views of the Mandovi River and Old Goa.

2. Church of St. Francis of Assisi

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, located in North Goa, is famous for its beauty and unique museum that displays artifacts, sculptures, and paintings from its glorious past. The church’s interiors boast intricate embellishments and are renowned for their Baroque and Corinthian architectural styles. 

The tabernacle, housing statues of Christ and St. Francis of Assisi, is a major attraction. Visitors can also view several paintings depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi and exquisitely carved frescoes and woodwork. The church is located in Velha Goa and is open all days except Sundays from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.

3. Se Cathedral

The Se Cathedral is the largest church in Goa and is celebrated for its magnificent architecture. Built to honor St. Catherine and commemorate Portugal’s triumph over India, this church showcases Portuguese-Manueline-style architecture with Tuscan and Corinthian interiors. 

The church’s location is spiritually powerful and home to the impressive Great Golden Bell, which has received the blessing of the Pope in the form of the Golden Rose. Visitors can also enjoy some of Goa’s top shopping areas surrounding the church. It’s important to note that the church is located in Velha Goa and is open every day from 7:30 am to 6 pm.

The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, a 17th-century church in the heart of Panjim, is one of the most famous churches in Goa. Its Baroque-style architecture is a sight to behold, and the church’s white and blue color scheme exudes simplicity and serenity. St. Xavier’s chapel is another attract visitors attractions inside the church. 

The feast hosted on December 8th is one of the year’s highlights, drawing thousands of devotees to the church for a joyous celebration. The church is located at Church Square in Panaji and is open every day from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm the afternoon.
