Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez (born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on February 3, 1976), best known as dadiyanki, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter hailed as the “King of Reggaeton”. His international success introduced the genre to a global audience and made him one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all time.
Early life and the origins of reggaeton
- A different path: In his youth, Ayala dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player and tried out for the Seattle Mariners.
- Career-altering incident: Before signing with the team, a shooting incident left him with a bullet lodged in his hip. He later stated that this event forced him to abandon his baseball aspirations and focus entirely on his music career.
- Pioneering a genre: In the 1990s, he fused hip-hop, Latin Caribbean music, and reggae beats into a unique style. Along with DJ Playero, he is credited with coining the term “reggaeton” for this burgeoning sound in Puerto Rico’s underground music scene.
Rise to international fame
- Barrio Fino (2004): After releasing several locally successful albums, his landmark record Barrio Fino and its hit single “Gasolina” propelled reggaeton into the global mainstream. This album was named the top-selling Latin music album of the 2000s.
- “Despacito” (2017): His career received a major boost with the megahit collaboration “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi. The song became the first Spanish-language track since “Macarena” to top the Billboard Hot 100. Its accompanying music video was once the most-viewed on YouTube.
- Spotify milestone: The success of “Despacito” made Daddy Yankee the first Latin artist to become the most-listened artist worldwide on Spotify in June 2017.
Retirement and new beginnings
- Farewell tour and album: In March 2022, after a career spanning three decades, Daddy Yankee announced his retirement. He released his final album, Legendaddy, followed by a farewell world tour called La Última Vuelta.
- Dedication to Christianity: At his final concert in Puerto Rico in December 2023, he publicly announced his decision to leave secular music and dedicate his life to Christianity.
- Return to music: In July 2025, he returned to music with a new single, “Sonríele,” under the name DY. The song, a blend of Caribbean rhythms with a Christian theme, signifies a new musical direction.
