5 Tips on How to Find Windows XP Product Key


Windows XP is a great operating system. Microsoft has improved on the Windows XP operating system with many newer versions, but many people still prefer Windows XP. One of the reasons for this is because it is much cheaper than the newer versions. However, it can be difficult to find a product key for Windows XP. But here are some tips on how to find your Windows XP product key and other helpful information about finding your product key for any version of windows.

What is a product key?

A product key is a unique 25-character code that identifies your copy of Windows XP. If you have lost the product key for your version of Windows, you can retrieve it by using one of these methods.

If you’re looking for your Windows XP product key, there are a few options to try.

How did I get my Windows XP product key?

· The product key is on your original packaging or on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker affixed to your computer

· If not, it’s most likely located in the registry. You can find out where to look by going to Start > Run and entering “regedit.” Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents. Now do a search for “ProductId” from that list and then check the Data column to see what the Product ID is.

· In some cases, if you have an operating system CD with an installation disc, you may need to input a 25-character product key

Finding your product keys for any version of Windows

Every version of Windows has a 25 character product key. The product key is the product ID required for installation. If you misplaced your Windows XP product key, don’t worry – finding it is easy!

The first place to check is on the original DVD that came with your computer. It should be on the back or inside the case. You can also find it in your email inbox if you ordered it online or received an email with the order confirmation information. Finally, you may be able to find it in your settings, under System > About > Legal > License agreement.

1) Click Start and search for cmd

2) Right-click on cmd and choose Run as administrator

3) Type “slmgr -dli” without quotes into the command prompt to run the license install wizard

4) When prompted enter “y” then hit Enter to have Windows locate your installation files


You don’t need a product key to install Windows. The installation DVD that comes with the operating system is a full installer that will work without a product key. However, you will need a product key to activate the OS after installation.
