This was more than a gold dress watch from Patek Philippe and over ten times the cost of a Rolex Submariner. Many critics scoffed, predicting Audemars Piguet’s imminent bankruptcy. In 1993, the brand introduced the Royal Oak Offshore, a bigger, more aggressive take on the design that cemented the trend for oversized luxury watches. Later, the experimental Royal Oak Concept series would push the boundaries of materials and technology.
