Four Things to Know Before You Try Car Shipping

There are a lot of different ways to go about transporting a car when you’re moving or even just taking an extended vacation.  Most of us probably think of the classic road-trip sort of deal, where we drive the car ourselves to our destination.  The thing is, in this day and age, that’s becoming a lot less feasible.

After all, gas is pretty pricey, and taking the days off of work necessary to do that tends not to be a great idea anymore.  What are our other options, though?  One is car shipping, which is what we’ll be taking a deep dive into today.

One: You’ll Need a Lot of Documentation

As with most things in life, you can’t just drop your car off at a depot, tell them where you want it to go, and call it a day.  No – when you’re using car shipping services, there’s going to be some information that they need first.  Any registration info that you’ve got on hand will be helpful of course, since it helps prove that the vehicle is indeed yours.

Your driver’s license and/or passport will also help since there needs to be proof of identity as well.  Really, most of us should have this stuff on hand anyhow.  However, it’s nice to be forewarned before we get our consultation, that way we won’t have any unnecessary roadblocks along the way.

Two: Keep Track of Damage to Your Vehicle

In a similar vein to the previous point, before you start the process, you’ll probably want to keep track of any pre-existing damage on your car.  The thing is, if you take inventory of them and have all of that record, you’ll have an easier time filing a claim in the event that there are any new dents or scratches thanks to the shipping process.

Of course, that sort of thing doesn’t exactly happen all of the time.  Still, it’s best to be prepared just in case.  Better safe than sorry, right?  The most important thing though is that you do have all of this stuff written down somewhere.  Photographs help as well, just to keep all of the documentation straight and with proof.

Three: You Can Reduce the Costs

A lot of folks seem to associate car shipping as being really expensive.  This isn’t really the case, as you can see in this article: https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/moving-services/shipping-car-to-another-state-guide/.  Instead, the pricing models tend to get conflated because of the folks who talk about it without properly preparing their vehicle for the assessment and the journey afterward.

You see, you should always clear out any of the stuff in your car before shipping it.  Everything from the smallest receipt to the biggest valuables that you’ve forgotten to take out before should be removed.  That way, you’re not lugging around a bunch of extra “junk” so to speak as you go to the depot.

Even if it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, the fact of the matter is that all of those little items (even chargers and the like) will actually add to the total weight of your car.  This will inflate the price of shipping, since a lot of the time the bill is based on things like how big your vehicle is and how much it weighs.  Another way to keep that figure down is by making sure that you don’t have a full tank of gas – that can be heavy, after all.

Four: It’s Really Convenient, Despite the Process

The last thing to take into account before you decide to get your car shipped is that really, the convenience is hard to beat here.  A lot of the coverage on this page explains it in further detail, but the main thing that you’ll want to remember is that even though you’re paying a fee to have your vehicle shipped, you’re probably saving yourself a good deal of cash in the meantime.

Think about it – driving your car there yourself isn’t going to be cheap.  You’ll have to stop and pay for gas a lot, as well as buy meals and pay for a hotel or motel room to sleep in.  If you’re moving far away, this whole cycle could be repeated for days.  That’s not a small chunk of change, unfortunately.

Besides that, though, if you decide to use shipping services, you won’t have to wait nearly as long to start getting settled in your new home.  You can even start working earlier and exploring the neighborhood sooner.  No more week-long trek to get there only to be thrust into a bunch of stressful stuff like that.  Instead, you’ll be able to pace yourself properly as you get all of your affairs in order – after all, there’s a lot involved with moving like this.
