Treatment of Meningioma – the most common type of tumors

What is Meningioma?

Meningioma is a very rare disease which has been studied to occur just fewer than 1 million cases per year in India. Generally, it is a usual non-cancerous tumor that arises from the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This kind of tumors forms on three layers of membranes medically known as meninges. These tumors are slow growing and have been reported to be non-cancerous 90% of the cases. Most of the Meningioma occurs at the brain but they could also grow on arts of our spinal cord.

Reports have also shown that Meningiomas are the most common type of tumors that affects our central nervous system. It generally occurs mostly in females as compared to males.

The cancerous Meningioma which has been reported as a very rare case tends to grow very rapidly.  They could easily spread on other parts of the brain apart from their site of origin often leading to the lungs.

Meningioma: Causes And Symptoms

There has been no finite evidence of what actually causes Meningioma in the first place. Since it is a very rare disease, doctors throughout the world have come to the conclusion with some of the only vague causes.

Researchers have come to the conclusion that several potential causes that could trigger these unusual cell growth include:

  • Genetic Mutation:

Almost 80% of the times, Meningiomas occurs due to a certain abnormality on chromosome 22. These chromosomes are responsible for inhibiting the uneven cellular growth. So, when this function fails to perform, its cells grow rapidly resulting in a tumor.

  • Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation:

It has been found through research that high doses of radiation at the head or neck could result in Meningioma occurrence. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that it, in turn, affects chromosome 22 resulting in unusual cell growth.

  • Hormones:

Meningioma occurs more in females as compared to males. This supports the fact that Meningioma has something to do with female hormones. when cells are exposed to progesterone, they tend to grow rapidly. The same with that of breast cancer.

General symptoms of Meningioma

  • Sudden involuntary movements of a person’s muscles.
  • Single or multiple muscle twitches.
  • Loss of consciousness and body tone followed by twitching and relaxing muscle contraction.
  • Loss of control of body functionality.

Meningioma Treatment cost

Endovascular Neurosurgery

Considering the factors of surgery and medical procedures, Meningioma treatment cost in India around (5500 to 7000 USD). The success rate of such operations, whether it is cancerous or not, depending on the gender and age of the patient is 95%.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy is more or less like Chemotherapy itself. In this therapy, the abnormal cell growths are killed using X-Rays and other high energy rays. It costs around (650-1200 USD) per session.

Chemotherapy, Hormone Therapy, and Immunotherapy

Here, Chemotherapy and Chemotherapeutic drugs are used to inhibit rapid cell growth. Along with this drugs are mainly prescribed in order to reduce the side effects of Chemotherapy itself. It costs almost the same as Radiation Therapy i.e (650-1200 USD) per session.

With having a brief overview, you can easily round up your budget. These are the overview of the standard costs although it could vary within different hospitals. Just remember one thing.
