Football is one of the most popular sports in Bangladesh, second only to cricket, which ended up becoming more popular due to the good performance of the national team.
In any case, football is still liked and played by many in the country, with some even going to 22bet Bangladesh to place sports bets not only on local teams but also on international competitions.
Even though the football price in Bangladesh is not really low, many people enjoy going to games and following not only their favorite local teams but also the local national team in Asian competitions.
But, who are the biggest football clubs in Bangladesh in history and also nowadays? We’ve talked to author Kate Richardson – check her profile here – and made a list of the biggest winners in the history of the Bangladesh League.
Bangladesh League
The official football league in the country is called the Bangladesh Premier League and, since its creation in 2007, 4 teams have managed to become national champions.
In season 2021-22, a total of 12 teams compete in the competition. Unlike what happens in Europe, the competition will only start in January 2022.The main team to keep an eye on this new season is the Bashundhara Kings, champion of the last two seasons.
Biggest Winners of the Bangladesh Premier League
Even with the decline of football in Bangladesh, the national league is still watched by many people, who continue being avid fans and supporting their clubs during the season.
As we said before, only 4 teams were able to become champions of the Bangladesh Premier League and here they are.
Sheikh Russel KC
In the 2012-13 seasons, Sheikh Russell KC achieved their only Bangladesh Premier League title so far.The Bengal Blues, as they are called, were created in 1996 and only appeared in the first local division in the 2002-03 seasons. It took 10 years until the good results started to come.
However, when it came, Sheikh Russell KC got the local tremble, winning the three most important competitions:
- TheFederationCup
- TheIndependenceCup
- TheBangladeshPremierLeague
BashundharaKings
One of the hottest teams at the moment, Bashundhara Kings won only 2 Bangladesh Premier League titles, and that in the last two seasons played.
His first title came in season 2018-19 and, due to the pandemic; the following season was not played. Fortunately for The Kings’ fans, in the 2020-21 seasons they also managed to finish at the top of the table and raise yet another trophy.
Under the command of Spanish Oscar Bruzón, much is expected from the team for this new season. It will certainly be possible to find flags in Bangladesh football cum around the Bashundhara Kings’ stadium.
Sheikh Jamal DC
The second most successful team in the history of the Bangladesh Premier League is Sheikh Jamal DC and also one of the most popular.Created in the year 1962, still under the name of Dhanmondi Club, Yellow Fear won its first local premier league title in the 2010-11 season.
After that, two more titles came in a row, in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Also, they were last season’s runners-up.Because of that, many believe they will fight for next season’s title.
Dhaka Abahani
The greatest champions of the Bangladesh Premier League are the Dhaka Abahani, with a total of 6 titles.
They were the ones who lifted the trophy in the first year of the competition, in the 2007-08 season, and also in the two following years. The fourth title came in the year 2012 and then there were two more titles, one in 2016 and the other in 2018.
Last season, the team finished third, despite having spent much of the competition in second place. The Sky Blue Brigade finished 5 points behind Sheikh Jamal DC, the runners-up.
As the most successful team in the league’s history and having had good performances in recent years, Dhaka Abahani is also in contention for the title of the current season.
Bangladesh National Team
The country does not have a good development in the sport and, consequently, ends up not having good players. The high football boots price in Bangladesh also makes many young people play just for fun and fail to get to the point of training and evolving.
One of the proofs of the team’s low performance is that it hasn’t qualified for the Asian Cup finals since 1980. Furthermore, it has never qualified for a World Cup either.
Under the command of Briton Jamie Day, who took office in 2018, it has already been possible to see an improvement in the performance of the Bengal Tigers, with good performances in qualifying for the World Cup, despite the defeats suffered.
Conclusion
Although it is very unlikely that we will see a Bangladesh football match in USA or any other western country, there is a good local league with nationally competitive teams that not only have coaches but also international players.
Of course, football in Bangladesh still has a lot to improve if they want to start playing among the greats in Asia, both at the club level and at the national team level.
The first step would be to bring top international players and then, after that, start importing more players into European leagues.Currently, we only find players of Bangladeshi descent in Europe, like for example HamzaChoudhury, who plays for Leicester City in England.
With these changes and a little more encouragement for local football, it’s possible to start to see Bangladeshi teams and the national team reaching new heights.
